How Much Resin for 1 Inch Depth

A 1 inch deep pour is the most common casting depth for river table channels, mold fills, and decorative inlays. Calculating the volume correctly before you buy — and using the right type of epoxy for this depth — determines whether the project succeeds or fails.

Enter your exact dimensions and depth to get a precise resin volume — in fluid ounces or gallons.

The Formula

To calculate resin volume for a 1 inch deep pour:

Volume (fl oz) = Length (in) × Width (in) × 1 ÷ 1.805

1.805 converts cubic inches to fluid ounces. Add 10% waste to the result.

Example: a river channel 6 inches wide × 48 inches long at 1 inch deep:
6 × 48 × 1 = 288 cubic inches ÷ 1.805 = ~160 fl oz (~1.25 gallons)

Volume Table — Common Areas at 1 Inch Depth

Area (L × W)Volume (fl oz)Volume (gallons)
6 in × 12 in~40 fl oz~0.31 gal
6 in × 24 in~80 fl oz~0.63 gal
6 in × 48 in~160 fl oz~1.25 gal
8 in × 48 in~213 fl oz~1.67 gal
10 in × 72 in~399 fl oz~3.1 gal
12 in × 12 in~80 fl oz~0.63 gal
12 in × 24 in~160 fl oz~1.25 gal
12 in × 48 in~319 fl oz~2.5 gal

Add 10% to all volumes above to account for cup residue, mixing loss, and slight measurement variance in your actual channel dimensions.

Epoxy Type for 1 Inch Pours

Do not use tabletop or coating epoxy for 1 inch pours. Tabletop epoxy is rated for 1/8–1/4 inch per layer. At 1 inch, it generates dangerous heat, cracks, and turns yellow. Use a deep-pour casting resin rated for at least 1 inch per layer.

Deep-pour (casting) resins cure more slowly with lower exothermic heat, making them safe for 1–4 inch single pours. See: how thick can you pour epoxy for a full comparison by product type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much resin do I need for a 1 inch deep pour?

Multiply your area in square inches by 1 (depth), then divide by 1.805 to get fluid ounces. For a 12×12 inch area at 1 inch deep: 144 ÷ 1.805 ≈ 80 fl oz. Use the volume calculator for any dimensions.

Can I pour 1 inch of regular tabletop epoxy in one pour?

No. Tabletop epoxies are limited to 1/4 inch per layer. Pouring 1 inch causes overheating, cracking, and yellowing. Use a deep-pour casting resin specifically rated for 1 inch or more per pour.
