Epoxy Countertop Calculator
Countertops are measured by the linear foot, but epoxy is sold by volume — bridging that gap is what this guide does. Below you'll find ready-to-use coverage tables for kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, and bar tops, plus guidance on coat systems, edge allowance, and substrate prep.

Calculate Epoxy Amount →Epoxy per Linear Foot — Standard Kitchen Counter (25" deep)
These estimates are for a 25-inch deep countertop (standard kitchen depth) at 1/8 inch flood coat, including a 15% allowance for edge drips and waste.
| Counter Length | Surface Area | 1 Flood Coat | Seal + Flood (2 coats) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 lin ft | ~8.3 sq ft | ~19 fl oz | ~29 fl oz |
| 6 lin ft | ~12.5 sq ft | ~29 fl oz | ~43 fl oz |
| 8 lin ft | ~16.7 sq ft | ~38 fl oz | ~58 fl oz |
| 10 lin ft | ~20.8 sq ft | ~48 fl oz | ~72 fl oz |
| 12 lin ft | ~25 sq ft | ~57 fl oz | ~86 fl oz |
| 16 lin ft | ~33.3 sq ft | ~76 fl oz | ~114 fl oz |
| 20 lin ft | ~41.7 sq ft | ~96 fl oz | ~144 fl oz |
Seal coat = 1/16 inch (half thickness, half volume). Flood coat = 1/8 inch.
By Counter Type and Size
| Counter Type | Typical Size | Epoxy (2-coat system) |

| Small kitchen (8 lin ft) | 8 ft × 25 in | ~58 fl oz |
| Medium kitchen (12 lin ft) | 12 ft × 25 in | ~86 fl oz |
| Large kitchen (18 lin ft) | 18 ft × 25 in | ~129 fl oz |
| Bar top (8 lin ft × 16 in) | 8 ft × 16 in | ~37 fl oz |
| Bar top (12 lin ft × 16 in) | 12 ft × 16 in | ~55 fl oz |
| Island (4 × 3 ft) | 48 × 36 in | ~62 fl oz |
Countertop Coat System Guide
| Coat | Thickness | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seal coat | 1/16 in | Seal substrate pores | Brush on thin; required for wood/concrete |
| Flood coat 1 | 1/8 in | Main body coat | Self-leveling; apply after seal coat gels |
| Flood coat 2 (optional) | 1/8 in | Added depth/clarity | For embedded art or decorative layers |
| Topcoat (optional) | 1/16 in | UV protection | Use UV-resistant formula near windows |
Application Tips for Countertops
- Level the surface: Epoxy is self-leveling — if the counter isn't level, the epoxy will pool at the low end. Use a torpedo level and shims before pouring.
- Dam the edges: Tape a painter's tape dam along the underside of the front edge to control drips. Remove tape just before the epoxy gels.
- Torch bubbles: Pass a propane torch or heat gun quickly over the surface 2–3 minutes after pouring to pop surface bubbles. Don't hold the flame in one spot.
- Temperature matters: Apply between 70–80°F for best self-leveling. Cold epoxy thickens and won't level properly. Warm the room and the counter if needed.
- Dust cover: Tent cardboard or plastic sheeting over the counter (without touching) for the first 4 hours to prevent dust nibs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much epoxy do I need per linear foot of countertop?
For a standard 25-inch deep countertop at 1/8 inch flood coat, plan on approximately 28–30 fl oz per linear foot including edge drip allowance. A 10-foot kitchen run needs about 280–300 fl oz (roughly 2.2 quarts) for one flood coat, or about 420 fl oz for a seal coat plus flood coat.
How many coats of epoxy does a countertop need?
Most countertop applications need 2 coats: a thin seal coat (1/16 inch) and a flood coat (1/8 inch). For concrete countertops or decorative work with embedded items, a third flood coat may be added.
Do I need to dam the edges when coating a countertop with epoxy?
Yes — always tape a dam along the underside of the counter edge or use painter's tape to control drips. Self-leveling epoxy will flow over unprotected edges. Factor in 10–15% extra for edge coverage when calculating your total amount.
